Updated Saturday March 12th, 2010

Dear ARCHE Members,

Well I have some exciting news! After a very long process with the help of a great team, we have finally found a location to hold AAA (Arche Afternoon Activities) again! Please read through this email carefully and save it as there are a lot of details here!

We will be having an informational meeting/registration night on Thursday March 25th from 7-8pm at Southside Pentecostal Assembly. Please mark this date on your calendar and plan to be there if you would like to register your children for this session of AAA. If you are unable to come please send someone in your stead or contact me if you are absolutely unable to be there and have no one who can come for you. We are making some changes to how AAA will be run and want to share all the details and give an opportunity for questions. This will also be the time to sign up your child for the classes as well as yourself for volunteer roles. This is also the time to pay for classes. There will be a $10 facility fee per family and then a $15 per child fee for the session to cover supplies for all three classes.

Location: Southside Pentecostal Assembly

Address: 41 Birchwood Rd. (just off of Grant Dr. in the South end)

There is some parking on the street & in the parking lot at the back of the church as well.

Here is the link to the church's website with some good pics.  http://www.sparegina.com/

We will be using their auditorium as a gym as they have graciously offered to move the chairs out for us each week!

Important Details for Consideration

-         This short spring session will run on Thursday afternoons. In the fall we are hoping to run AAA on Fridays.

-         The session will run from Thursday, April 15th to Thursday,  May 27th except for April 22nd when an Eco Ed. day has already been planned- a total of six Thursdays

-         There will be three 45 min classes offered for each age group. The afternoon will run from 12:30-4pm starting with planned visiting from 12:30- 12:55 and an assembly at 1pm.

-         There will be no classes for 3 year olds. The starting age will be 4 years old.

-         You must be a member or become a member of ARCHE in order to register.

Teaching

-         In participating in AAA, please expect to be busy 2 of the 3 periods filling a volunteer role. These required roles include teaching/co-teaching, helping in a class, or acting as a nursery worker. If you are needed less, count it as a bonus. Our goal is to have 2-3 adults in each class.

-         If you need ideas for teaching please contact me as I can share ideas with you or recommend some resources from the ARCHE library to get you started. Any classes that encourage friendship and social interaction between the children are espcially great!

-     If you already know what you would like to teach or co-teach, please email your class idea and the age group you would like to teach. First come first serve.

-    If you are planning on including faith based components in your class,  you will need to submit your plan to the ARCHE board for review first. please contact me for more information

-    They have a stellar kitchen there (2 stoves, 2 microwaves, 2 stovetops) that we will be using as one of the teaching rooms so consider teaching a cooking class! Also, as mentioned before the auditorium can be used for big gym type games so we need these type of classes as well.

-    Teachers will not recieve an honorarium as in the past. However, there will be a certain amount of money available to cover supplies for each class. Please save youir reciepts when you buy materials for teaching your class.

-     If we cannot find enough teachers we will just not run those classes that do not have a teacher.

-         You are welcome to have your younger children/babies with you as you teach and help as long as they do not take away too much from the class.  You could also consider swapping babysitting with a friend at AAA that your children are comfortable with so you help eachother out during your busy class periods. There is also the option to leave them in the nursery with the nursery workers. Or,  if you are really fortunate maybe a grandparent might enjoy an afternoon with a little one! If you are feeling extremely panicked that your situation just won’t allow you to help out like just having had a baby or having multiple toddlers with you, don’t worry! We will be able to find you a role that will enable you to contribute so please talk to me!

-         We will also be designating two families each week to act as cleanup crew after each Thursday to ensure we do our absolute best to respect the facility.

-         The age groups that are tentatively planned are:

4/5, 6/7, 8/9, 10/11 and 12+

These categories could change if we have lot of a particular age group and very few of another or if we just have lots of children register and need to break up the age groups further.

So, PLEASE EMAIL ASAP with the number and ages of the children you are planning on registering so we can get an idea of the numbers and age categories we will be working with. This will make planning for teachers and class locations in the building easier.

Please email me if you have any further questions and don't forget to email me with a class idea if you would like to teach and how many children you are planning on registering.

Sincerely,

  Karen MacKenzie

Many thanks to the SHBE convention committee: John & Angela Quong, Lori Watson, Karen Henrion, Jo-Anne Lukey, Linda Karn, Rod Amberson, Angelo Coppola, and Bryan & Lori Sclamp for putting together an excellent Home Education convention here at the U of R here in
Regina. Thank you also to all the volunteers that made it possible!

ICE TIME:

Sherry Simpkins has booked some free ice time through the School Board.  Here are all the confirmed dates. All homeschoolers are welcome!

Monday, March 15, (afternoon) 1:15 - 3:15, Optimist Arena

Tuesday, March 16, (morning) 9:15 - 11:15, Doug Wickenheiser Arena

Please note, these ice times have been booked for us homeschoolers exclusively.   I would encourage all of you to take advantage of this opportunity to have fun as a family on the ice with your children.  Parents are responsible for their own children.

CSA approved helmets are mandatory for children.  Sports Exchange on 8th Avenue (just East of Albert Street) sells second hand sports equipment at reasonable prices.  I may have an extra helmet and I do have a pair of size 3 hockey skates here too if anyone would like to borrow them.

The initial plan is to have the ice "divided in two" - one half for those wanting to play games / shinny etc.  The other half would be for those who are learning to skate etc.  We'll try this out first and change it up if it doesn't work well.

Any questions, please feel free to email me or call me.

Sherry Simpkins 586-7152

P.S.  The following are rules and guidelines from the School Board.  Please take a moment to familiarize yourself with them

·     Our schools are guests at the various rinks in our city.  Respect for the ice and facilities, and courteous behavior to the rink personnel and the public is expected from all students.

·     Please do not allow students to bring treats of any sort to the rink

·    Wear a CSA approved hockey helmet

·    Dress in layers to provide comfort

·    Mitts or gloves on hands

I have the dvd set Teaching Writing - Structure and Style from Andrew Pudewa (Excellence in Writing).  I was wondering if there would be an interest if I offered to set up a series of evenings between November and February to view these as a group before the coming SHBE convention? (Andrew Pudewa is the keynote speaker this year).  There are 6 discs covering a 9 unit syllabus.  These dvds are quite amazing and the progress my children have made since using these techneques is shocking.  The workshop looks to be geared for teaching grades 2-10+.
If you are interested please let me know my number is 949-4537.
Thanks,
JoAnne Trott
